On May 11, 2021 the LaGrange Fire District responded to a “Smoke in the basement crawlspace”, 18:32 hours, at 35 Sunny Knolls Drive, Poughkeepsie NY in the Town of LaGrange. The first unit arrived on scene within five (5) minutes after dispatch to discover thick brown smoke and fire showing from the back corner of the single family home, extending to the first floor deck and eves. The alarm was quickly updated to a 2nd alarm structure fire calling additional resources from Arlington, Pleasant Valley, New Hackensack, Union Vale, and Beekman Fire Departments under mutual aid, as well as the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Team.
The initial crew stretched a 1 ¾ inch hose line to the rear of the home to quickly knock down the fire, before an interior search for life commenced. All residents were reported to be out of the home on the arrival of Fire Department personnel. The fire was declared under control at 19:06 hours.
In total four (4) Command Officers, five (5) Fire Investigative personnel, and thirty (30) firefighters worked together to man five (5) Engines, one (1) Rescue Truck, three (3) Water Tankers, and two (2) Ambulances. The home was uninhabitable due to the smoke and fire damage. The American Red Cross was called in to assist with temporary housing.
Mutual aid departments assisted in manning, securing a dedicated source of water, and manpower to complete interior searches for potential victims, fire and ventilation. The Dutchess County Fire Investigation Team is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
